If there is a cornerstone to prepping, it’s food. Being able to feed ourselves and our family is the primary reason to prep. It’s not as sexy as guns and gear, but you can bet that everyday you’re alive, you’re going to want to eat. And you’ll quickly reach a point where you have to eat if you’re going to keep going.
But food preps are more than just storing freeze dried #10 cans. A complete food storage system needs to take food production into account. Because if a disaster of sufficient magnitude occurs, you may be forced to rely on only what you can produce. Our food stores are designed to get us through to the first harvest and that’s really how they need to be thought of.
Food production comes in may forms. It can be growing your own. Raising livestock or hunting, fishing and trapping. All of these methods can and should be incorporated into your long-term food program. In this edition of the Insider, we talk about food and many ways to acquire it.
Food cannot just be a plan. It has to be a system where each of the methods of obtaining food are taken into consideration and a plan for each of the categories can be made. There may times and reasons you can’t hunt. But you could possibly trap. If you live near a body of water, you should certainly plan on fishing. But the surest way to ensure you have food is to grow it yourself. Whether that’s plants or animals. And there is a small scale solution no matter what your current situation is.
Use the advice contained in this edition to expand and improve your food system. And if you haven’t yet formulated one, use it as a guide to get you going. Because remember, you will need to eat every day. It’s the one part of your preps you can be assured you will use. Food can even come into play with a personal disaster. It may not be the end of the world that causes you to use your preps, it’s far more likely to be the end of your world.
