Petzl Noctilight – Lantern
One of the biggest challenges when building your survival bag is being limited by size and weight constraints. It is always a balancing act between carrying more gear and keeping the weight down.
One of the best ways to combat this problem is to find multi-use items. Any single item that can fill two or three roles frees up more precious cubic inches in our bags for other essential gear.
One of the most important items at the top of any survival bag list should be a light. Headlamps are starting to take over more and more of the flashlight market as manufacturers them smaller and brighter.
Being able to move and work while keeping your both hands free is one of the biggest upsides of a headlamp. No more having to hold your flashlight under your arm or in your mouth!
One of the biggest and most popular brands of headlamps is Petzl. Founded in 1975, the Petzl brand has been synonymous with hiking and mountaineering. Rugged and reliable, they will make a great addition to any survival bag.
Wanting to make their headlamps even more versatile, while keeping them protected in a full survival bag led Petzl to design the Noctilight.
The Noctilight provides solutions for a few of the common problems that you run into with a headlamp. First off the headstraps tend to get tangled with your other gear, making it difficult at times to get the headlamp out of your bag.
Also since most headlamps are made of plastic to keep their weight down, they are prone to damage unless you store them in a protective case.
Not content with making just another generic case, Petzl worked on their case design to make the headlamp even more functional.
The Noctilight is extremely easy to use. Simply unzip the two sections, and place your headlamp inside the globe. The head strap fits nicely in the lower half of the case. With a quick pull on the zipper the Noctilight is ready to go.
The frosted translucent rubber globe of the Noctilight creates an even spill of light that is perferct for using inside your tent, house, or even hanging from a tree in your campsite. The soft glow of the lantern is easy on your eyes for reading and other tasks.
Your Petal headlamp switch sits just inside the rubber sidewalls making turning on the light and switching between modes very simple. The Noctilight includes a raised power icon molded into the rubber to help you to find the power button even in the pitch black of night.
The Noctilight comes with a built in elastic lanyard on the bottom of the base giving you endless options to hang the light. When you are not using the lantern it stows away and never gets hung up on anything. Attaching a small carabineer onto the lanyard gives you even more flexibility to hang your latenr where you need light.
For under $20 the Noctilight is a great addition to your survival bag. It gives you the freedom and versatility of a lantern in the small package of a headlamp.
The Petal Noctilight is compatible with all Tikkina, Tikka, Zipka, Actik, Actik Core, Reactik, Reactik +, Tactikka, Tactikka + and Tactikka + RGB headlamps. Weighing just three ounces, the Noctilight cannot be left out of your bag.
The Petzl Noctilight has changed my campsite. After the first night, every person I have hiked said they needed a Noctilight of their own.
In addition to campsite duty, I have also used the lantern to light my living room during a power outage.
I no longer have to worry about my headlamp getting crushed in my bag, and the added features of the lantern far exceed the cost!
