Welcome to the Monthly Insider for November 2018 (Volume 2, Issue 11). This month’s topic is Primitive Survival (Vol 1).
It’s romantic, the thought of living in the wilderness. Being beholden to no one. I think Henry David Thoreau said it best, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”
However, the reality of such endeavors seldom lives up to the romance. That is not to say we should never venture into the wilderness for prolonged stays. It can reduce the stress of modern life, slowing things down as it were. But do so, successfully at least, requires some skills that are lost to most modern people.
In this edition of the Insider, we discuss those skills. The simple things we take for granted and that are so easy to achieve in the modern world require a bit more effort in the wild. Something as simple as clean water takes more effort than simply turning a tap. And what we consider shelter in the wilder places is far different than what we live in normally.
But possessing these skills and the ability to use them sets one far apart from their neighbors. For they know deep down, that they truly can survive in the wild, and more so, with effort and practice, actually thrive. So, take time to absorb these articles and make time to put these valuable, fading skills to practice. Pass them to the next generation and do a small part to keep them alive.
